Sheridan Fruit Company Recalls Bulk and Packaged Raw Pistachios Because of Possible Health Risk

May 1, 2009 -- Sheridan Fruit Company of Portland, Oregon is recalling 12 oz. packages of Sheridan Fruit Company Raw Pistachio Meats, and Bulk Raw Pistachio Kernels sold between February 5th and March 30th, 2009 because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were manufactured using pistachios recalled by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The products were sold at the Sheridan Fruit Company retail store in Portland, Oregon.

Raw Pistachio Kernels were sold bulk through self service bins labeled “Raw Pistachio Kernels – Product of California, Bin #945.

Raw Pistachio meats were sold in 12-ounce bags with the Sheridan Fruit Company logo and reads “Raw Pistachio Meats – Product of California USA” and has the bar code 0 00000 55700 9. There is no other specific identifying information on the package.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this these products. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the pistachio product received was manufactured using pistachios from Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. Sheridan Fruit Company has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
