Safeway Recalls Bread in Parts of California and Nevada

Pleasanton, Calif., — March 9, 2007 — Safeway Inc. today announced it is voluntarily recalling several of its private label bread products sold at Safeway and Pak ’n Save stores in Northern California and Northwest Nevada. The products may contain wire fragments from production machinery. The recall does not affect products sold at the Company’s Vons or Pavilions stores.

The recall affects the following products with "Best Before" dates up to and including March 17, 2007. (Example: Mar 17)

The "Best Before" date can be found on the plastic closure. The UPC number can be found on the bottom panel of bread bag. Customers who purchased these products in Northern California or Northwest Nevada can return the bread to their local store for a full refund.

While Safeway has received customer complaints, no injuries have been reported. The production machinery in question has been repaired and the production line cleaned. Safeway values its customers and apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.
