Raja Foods Issues Nationwide Recall on Swad Brand Raw Pistachios and Roasted Salted Natural Pistachios

Recall Details

April 13, 2009 -- Raja Foods LLC, announced a voluntary recall today of several pack sizes of in shell roasted and salted pistachios and raw pistachio kernels. This recall is a precautionary measure due to the voluntary recall of pistachios announced by supplier of the pistachios, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., on March 31,2009. Due to the products potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, the specific sizes being recalled are as follows:

  • Swad, 32oz/2lb Roasted and Salted Natural Pistachios. UPC 0-51179-19320
  • Swad 14oz Roasted and Salted Natural Pistachios. UPC 0-51179-19310
  • Swad 28oz Raw Green Pistachios. UPC 0-51179-19390
  • Swad 14oz Raw Green Pistachios. UPC 0-51179-19380
  • Swad 8 oz Raw Green Pistachios. UPC 0-51179-19385

No other SWAD brand products are involved in this recall.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Raja Foods LLC has not received any reports of illnesses in connection with the items listed above to date, and no other Raja Foods products are affected by this action.

These recalled pistachios, supplied by Setton Pistachio, were distributed to various Indian stores throughout the country. Consumers who have recently purchased the item listed above should not consume this product and should return it to the store of purchase for a full refund or replacement. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged to discard the pistachios and contact Consumer Affairs at (800) 800-7923 x 2866.
