Northern Star Co. Initiates a Voluntary Recall of Certain Simply Potatoes Plain Shredded Hash Browns

MIinnetonka, MN -- December 22 -- Northern Star Co., a subsidiary of Michael Foods, Inc., is recalling Simply Potatoes Plain Shredded Hash Browns from two production dates based upon reports of four bags in South Dakota containing small bits of glass. This is a voluntary recall. There have been no injuries reported. Based upon production records the suspect product was produced on only two dates and was likely restricted to a very small timeframe within those two days. The "use by" dates noted on the front of the packages are January 23, 2005 and January 24, 2005. Only Simply Potatoes Plain Shredded Hash Browns with these two use by dates are being recalled. No other Simply Potatoes products are subject to the recall, nor is there any impact on the company's foodservice products.

The voluntary recall takes effect immediately and involves retail stores in 35 states (listed below). There was also distribution to the Caribbean. Distributors and retailers are being contacted about this recall by the company and its brokers. The UPC Code for the product is 20169-22233 (product photos attached). The package size is 20 ounces.

Consumers are advised to not consume the products from the noted use by dates and instead return the product to the place of purchase for a full cash refund. Consumers with questions can contact a toll-free customer service number: 800-884-3200.
