Michaelene's, Inc./ Michaelene's Gourmet Granola Initiates Voluntary Nationwide Granola Recall Because of Possible Risk to Health

Clarkston, MI--March 6, 2009— Michaelene’s Gourmet Granola ™, of Clarkston, MI is voluntarily recalling the granola products listed below because they could potentially be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems.  Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain.  In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections ((i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

The granolas were distributed nationwide through retail stores and food distributors.

The recalled granola products include all lots of the following products beginning with 70, 80 or 905010 through 909210:

No other flavors of Michaelene’s Granola are affected by the recall.  Michaelene’s, Inc. has not received any complaints of consumer illnesses associated with these products.

This move is a result of the recently expanded peanut product recall by Peanut Corporation of America “PCA” as well as the recent closing of the Plainview, TX facility and its current recall of all peanuts and peanut products.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should either destroy the product or return it to their place of purchase for a full refund.  Consumers with questions may contact Michaelene’s at 248 625-0156 between the hours of 9:00 A.M.and 5:30 P.M.
